McDonald's Franchise - Safety and Security Solutions for Franchise Owners & Operators

Even if your franchise is successful and well-known, you still need to establish trust with your local customer base to set your franchise up for success.

Safety and security features can go a long way towards establishing trust with your guests and can also help with loss prevention and minimizing claims. To understand the safety and security needs of your particular restaurant and location, you must understand the strengths and weaknesses of your specific building and its surroundings.

Below are safety and security solutions that you can use to help create a safe and secure environment that will help improve the guest experience.

Provide Proper Lighting at Your Restaurants

Lighting is critical to the safety and security of guests at your restaurant. Lighting helps guests navigate exits in the event of an emergency or power outage, and outdoor lighting help keep away criminal activity.

Do not skimp on your lighting budget. Invest in high-quality LED lighting in and around your restaurants.

Install Camera Surveillance Equipment Around Your Restaurants

Security cameras can help minimize occurrences of burglaries, break-ins, vandalism, and criminal activity. In addition to their deterrent effect, cameras keep track of happenings inside and outside your restaurants.

To get the most out of a surveillance system, make sure security cameras are correctly placed, and you have more than you think you will need.

Security cameras should be placed to cover:

  • Hallways to bathrooms (they cannot be placed inside the bathrooms.)
  • Entrances & exits
  • Lobby counter area
  • Drink stations
  • PlayLands & PlayPlaces
  • Dining areas
  • The entire parking lot

Criminal activity can be a particular problem if your franchise opens early or stays open late. Having a proper security camera system in place helps prevent theft or crime, and can be used as evidence in the event a claim occurs.

Placing security cameras around the beverage station and in the dining areas will help deter claims. If an incident does occur, video surveillance footage can be used to assist in the defense of claims.

But security cameras are perhaps most important on the outside of a franchise location. Security cameras should be placed inside and outside drive-thru areas and should cover 100 percent of the parking area. Many incidents occur outside. Security cameras help promote customer safety and provide evidence for thefts, vandalism, and customer claims (such as falls). They also can be used to document property damage caused by storms or guests.

Cloud-Based Storage for Video Surveillance Footage

An often-overlooked component of a security surveillance system is cloud-based storage. While investing in cloud-based storage for surveillance videos involves a more substantial upfront investment, it will save money in the long-run.

When evaluating a cloud-based storage system for your surveillance footage, consider how long you intend to store the files. Many systems only store footage for 30 to 60 days, yet claims can show up months or even years later. Investing in a robust cloud-based storage system will allow you to access the data and files anytime.
